With area ponds low because of a protracted period without rain, possible human remains were found at a pond northeast of Bray. Last week, a couple of fishermen got a little more than they bargained for when they made the discovery which may be linked to an unsolved case from 2006.
Stephens County Sheriff, Wayne McKinney said the remains were turned over to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI).
“We’ve been working on it since Thursday and we continued to work on it over the weekend,” McKinney said.
The remains were found in a pond near Bailey Road where, in 2006, the body of Rose Bagley was discovered. There is no confirmation the recently discovered remains are those of Bagley.
“Right now, we believe that it was tied to a cold case of the previous administration that Sheriff Bruner had referred to OSBI in 2006, of a missing person from the Marlow area.”
OSBI public relations spokesperson, Jessica Brown confirmed the bureau picked up the remains on Friday, and they have been handed over to the medical examiner’s office.
“It’s in the M.E.’s hands now,” Brown said. “They will try to ID the remains and look for any evidence related to the death.”
According to McKinney, drought conditions are believed to have led to the latest discovery.
“Because of the drought conditions, ponds have been drained down and the remains were discovered,” McKinney said. “We are not sure if this is going to be part of this case or not. Right now, we are working with the OSBI and giving them any assistance they may request.”
Lindsay resident, Bagley was last seen in Marlow on May 23, 2006.
A July 2, 2006, an article in The Review says fishermen discovered the body of Bagley, 46, at the Bailey Road pond. She had been missing since May 23, 2006. According to the article, Lindsay police turned the case over to OSBI two weeks later.
According to an article in the Aug. 3, 2006 edition of The Marlow Review, Justin Brian Foss of Marlow, who was believed to be the last person seen with Bagley, was questioned but was never charged in connection with the case.
