FILLING THE SHELVESThe Garland Smith Public Library recently received a number of books that have been nominated for the annual Sequoyah Book Awards. The books were purchased by the Friends of the Library organization.
Elementary, middle school and high school students are encouraged to read the books on the Sequoyah masterlists and vote for their favorites. Students in grades six through eight must read or listen to at least three titles to qualify for voting.
Each year, the Sequoyah Children’s Book Award goes to the children’s book receiving the most votes, the Intermediate Award to the book chosen by students in sixth through eighth grades, and the High School Award to the recipient determined in high school voting.
The Sequoyah awards are sponsored by the Oklahoma Library Association and are named for Sequoyah, an Oklahoma Cherokee who developed the Cherokee syllabary.
