The Central High Bronchos will be looking for a new football coach again after the resignation of Darren Lamar was accepted at Monday night’s school board meeting.
Lamar led his team to a 7-4 record and a berth in the Class B playoffs in his only year as head coach in 2012.
He will be taking an assistant football coaching position at Salina, which is northeast of Tulsa near Lake Hudson.
Salina is a Class 2A school and plays in the 2A-8 District and the school is “about the size of Comanche’s,” according to Lamar.
“I wanted to be an assistant again,” Lamar said of his decision to leave Central High. “I was wearing down as a head coach, and we were having some family issues. I was looking to get as far away as I could from here. I am hoping by finding something else, things will get better.”
The new hire came quickly for Lamar. He said he felt good at the end of the track season and knew he would have a good team coming back in the fall.
“Things started bubbling up in March to make me rethink staying, and then this job (in Salina) opened up,” Lamar said.
Lamar, who was the only local coach coaching in the Lawton area all-star game, applied for the assistant job with the Wildcats on a Saturday, received a phone call two days later on Monday, and then went for the job interview on Tuesday.
“Two hours after the interview they called and offered me the job,” Lamar said. “It all happened pretty fast.”
The 2012 Bronchos started out 4-0 before going 1-3 in their next four games. They would keep their playoff hopes alive by winning their last two games of the regular season. They fell to Laverne, 58-12, in the first round of the playoffs.
The Bronchos have had trouble recently keeping a coach for more than a year. The next head football coach will be the seventh in the past six years.
Lamar’s tenure lasted exactly one year after being hired in June 2012 to replace Andy Claborn who had been hired two months earlier. He resigned after taking CHS through spring drills to take another coaching position. Claborn had taking over for Mark Perry, who coached the team in 2011, and is now the high school principal.  The year before Colin Watkins was head coach for one year. He replaced Glennis Ring who only coached in 2009. Stony Burt was the coach in 2008.
