The Marlow Outlaws overcame six errors in the field with solid pitching and good hitting last Thursday to extend their winning streak to three games with a 6-1 win over Sulphur.
Marlow came within one out of posting its second straight shutout, but three errors in the top of the seventh inning led to the end the streak.
The game, which Marlow had controlled from the early going, was one hit away by Sulphur from bringing the tying run to the plate. Marlow right fielder Anthony Green bailed his team out, however, with a diving catch to end the game with the bases loaded with Bulldogs.
“At the end of the day, it’s a great win,” Marlow coach Jeff Brewer said. “We had six errors, and that’s not acceptable, but we’ve started to hit the ball.
“As a coach, you want to focus on the negative things, but we had good pitching and offense, so overall it was a good game.”
Three Marlow pitchers combined for the near-shutout. Trey Coffman pitched three scoreless innings, followed by three more by Beau Meshell, and Tyler Brite pitched the final inning, giving up an unearned run.
Marlow pounded out 10 hits in the contest, led by Coffman, who was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Coffman was the first to score for the Outlaws. In the bottom of the first, he singled and stole second base. Brite then followed with a base hit to score Coffman and give Marlow a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second, the Outlaws managed to keep Sulphur off the scoreboard in the top of the third. With runners on first and third and one out, second baseman Seth Scarbrough caught a pop-up in the infield, followed by a ground out to shortstop Wakley Bergner to end the threat.
Marlow had better luck in its half of the third. Coffman tripled down the left field line to score Kelby Richardson, who had walked. Brite then grounded out to shortstop, allowing Coffman to score, and picking up his second RBI of the game.
Meshell was able to work out of a jam in the top of the fourth when he left two men stranded on base with a strikeout for the third out.
Marlow was able to get a comfortable lead in the third, doubling up its score to go up 6-0.
Austin Forsythe got an RBI single to left field to score Meshell. Richardson would pick up an RBI on a groundout, scoring Anthony Green. Scarbrough would then drive in Forsythe with the final run of the inning on an RBI single.
The Bulldogs threatened again in the top of the sixth, but Meshell got out of a bases-loaded jam by getting a strikeout for the final out.
Sulphur finally broke through in the top of the seventh. With Tyler Brite on the mound, Marlow lost its edge and committed three errors, including two back-to-back. The result was a run scored and the bases loaded before Green’s clutch diving grab ended the game.
Following Coffman at the plate were: Green, 2-for-2 with a run scored; Forsythe, 1-for-2 with a run scored, RBI; Richardson, 1-for-3 with a run scored, RBI; Meshell, 1-for-3, run scored; Brite, 1-for-4, 2 RBI; Scarbrough, 1-for-4, RBI.
Coffman was the winning pitcher, pitching three innings with three strikeouts, three hits, no earned runs, and no walks. Meshell went three inning with four strikeouts, two hits, no walk. Brite pitched one inning with two walks and one strikeout.
Marlow will travel to Washington today before travel to play Kingfisher at Bricktown in Oklahoma City on Friday. Marlow’s next home game will be Saturday against Central High at 2 p.m.
