Betty Margaret Bowles

In the early hours of Wednesday, January 24, 2018, Betty Bowles passed peacefully in her home.

Graveside services were held at the Addington Cemetery on Sunday, January 28, 2018, at 2 p.m., with the Reverend Bill Boles and Pastor Mike McCord officiating

Betty Margaret Edwards Bowles was born on June 11, 1929, on the EB Ranch (Edwards, Beavers) southeast of Comanche, Oklahoma. She was the second born of seven children to Howard and Leona Cummins Edwards. She attended the tiny EB Ranch School in her primary years and graduated from Addington High School. For a short period after graduation, she attended OCW in Chickasha, where she participated in swimming and dancing.

Betty married the love of her life, Howard Bowles, on July 3, 1948. They were married for 67 wonderful years before his passing on April 2, 2016.

Betty was a homemaker and was involved in many activities outside the home. She taught Sunday school for several years and she and Howard were members of the Heritage Oaks Nazarene Church (formerly Oak Avenue) for 50 plus years. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She was the best Nanny anyone could ever have. Her family was her life. Betty was passionate in her love for Christ and was her family’s faithful prayer warrior. She held our family together with unconditional love and acceptance. She was Hambone’s right-hand partner and could whip up the best chocolate pie on the Chisholm Trail.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Henry Bowles; her parents, Howard and Leona Edwards; sisters, Jean Lyle, June Brandon, Ann Hokit, and Jane Edwards. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Clinton Henry McCarter, and a daughter-in-law, Linda Howell.

Betty is survived by one brother, Billy Howard Edwards and his wife, Imogene of Marlow, and one sister, Janice Gardener of Eagan, Minnesota; three daughters, Kathy McCarter and her husband, Ray Gene of Marlow; Connie Higgins of Woodward; Cristy Lentz and husband, Walt of Duncan; and son, David Howell of Norman; grandchildren, Tammi McCarter and partner, Lester Lehew of Addington; Mellissa Dyer and husband, Chad of Central High; Christopher Garrett and wife, Jennifer of Oklahoma City; Cecil Howell and partner, Cedina of Edmond; Dave Howell and his wife, Regina of Norman; and LeAnn (Howell) Slate of Enid; step-grandchildren, Lynette McReynolds and her husband, Brent of Empire; Jennifer Smith and her husband, Neil of Perkins; great-grandchildren, Brandye Looper and husband, Colt of Centerville, Texas; Codye Leu of Marlow; Bailey Dyer and his fiancé, Makayla Clement of Edmond; Rylee and Ely Garrett of Oklahoma City; C.J. Howell of Duncan; Macey Howell of Healdton; and Allison and Dalton Howell of Norman; great-grandchildren, Luke and Jake McReynolds of Empire; Benton, Beckett, and Brewer Smith of Perkins; and Makayla Lehew of Addington; great-great-grandchildren, Cailye Bohot, Tye Looper, and Stephanie and Cody Howell; niece, Francis Ann Jackson of Salado, Texas, and family; nephew, Charles Henry Headrick and wife, Carol of Stillwater, and family. She was also loved by many more nieces, nephews, and a host of friends, as well as her final caregivers Carol Rochell and Maria Jones.

Pallbearers were Ray Gene McCarter, Charles Henry Headrick, Walt Lentz, Christopher Garrett, Codye Leu, and Bailey Dyer.

It was Betty’s request, in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Addington Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 111 Addington, Oklahoma 73520.
