Chisholm Trail Heritage Center to kick off Youth Art Month with exhibit reception

DUNCAN - "Building Community Through Art" is the 2018 national theme for Youth Art Month in March and recognized at venues across the country. A public reception, which includes refreshments, will be held 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 7.  

For eight years, Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan has participated in the program, serving as an exhibition host for area high school art. 

Participating schools this year are Duncan High School, Marlow High School, and FAME Academy, which includes students from Comanche, Walters and Ryan; and new to the show are Walters High School, Lawton Public Schools and Torah Meadow Homeschool.

Paintings, drawings, sculpture, pottery, mosaics and photography are on display in this year’s show, which ends March 31. Several students have multiple entries. Dalton Reid, a Duncan High School senior, is an intern at the Heritage Center this year through a school program and his art is in the show. He has entered his work in previous Youth Art Month (YAM) exhibits and is credited for helping install this year’s show as part of his internship.

There is no cost to the students or schools to participate, or to attend the public reception. Education programs at the Heritage Center attracted more than 10,000 students in 2017.

“The Youth Art Month reception is always a fun time because the students get to see their work on display in a professional setting, and families, friends and teachers who attend demonstrate a support for the students and the arts,” said Leah Mulkey, CTHC’s Education Coordinator. “We hope to see many people from Duncan and the surrounding communities attend the reception.”

Mulkey is the contact person for the annual show.
