Eugene S. Nichols

Eugene S. Nichols, departed this life on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, in Duncan at the age of 94.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 5, 2018, at the Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Marlow, with Rev. Toby Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Resthaven Garden of Memory in Wichita, KS, at 2 p.m. Monday, May 7, 2018. All arrangements have been entrusted to the Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral and Cremation Services in Marlow.

Eugene was born Friday, March 28, 1924, in Gothenburg, NE, to James Walter and Martha Harriet (Derickson) Nichols and was the youngest of 10 children. He attended school in Gothenburg and later moved to Wichita, KS, where he lived most of his life until moving to the Mustang area, the Lake Eufaula area, and finally Marlow, where he's resided since 2001. He was in the United States Air Corps where he served our country proud during WWII. He worked in construction as a General Contractor for the City of Mustang as a building inspector where he later retired. He married the love of his life, Vada Elizabeth Batdorf, in Wichita on January 1, 1945. They were married for 73 wonderful years. He loved baseball and was known for starting the first little league teams in Wichita. He enjoyed fishing and building things from knick-knacks to puzzles. He played drums in a band and played music until just a few months ago. Eugene was a man that gave of himself and was always willing to help in any way he could. Some of his many activities were helping in the church where needed, working as a volunteer fireman, or even playing Santa Clause in the parade. He was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Nichols of the home; two daughters, Linda Sharon Bell and husband, Bill of Norman, Verna Faye Lewis and husband, Mike of Duncan; daughter-in-law, Margaret Nichols Humphries and husband, Bob; six grandchildren, Tracy Heckes, Michelle Stokes, Christopher Lewis, David Kamphaus, Jennifer Haxton, and Michael Bowser; eight great-grandchildren, Jeremy Smith, Tyler Christy, Toni Rene Wilson, Robin Heckes, Andrew Kamphaus, Ryan Kamphaus, Cameron Haxton, and Perry Haxton. He is also survived by five great-great-grandchildren, Elana, Dakota, Harper, Katie, and Collin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Joe Eugene Nichols and Earl Nichols; his parents; six brothers; and 3 sisters.
