Humane Society Offers Summer Reading Program

by Elizabeth Pitts-Hibbard

The Stephens County Humane Society’s “Shelter Buddies” reading program begins June 6th and continues on Thursdays throughout the summer. Reading sessions are from 3-4pm and spots are filled on a first-come/first-served basis, so reservations are required.

SCHS board member Patti Whitaker describes the program, in which students will sit outside of kennels and read to dogs as well as reading to cats in the Cattery, as a “tail-wagging good time.”

“Parents are required to stay with their child during the reading session and there will be a volunteer supervising the readers and animals. Readers should bring something to sit on, like a pillow, towel, or small blanket, and their own books to read.” Participants are also allowed to bring treats to share with dogs or cats while they’re reading.

To reserve a spot, call Whitaker at 580-641-0667.
