Franklin Michael “Mike” McElroy

Franklin Michael “Mike” McElroy, departed this life on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, in Carrolton, Texas, at the age of 77.

Services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 19, 2018, at the Alex Public Schools Commons Building, with Rev. Tracy Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Westview Cemetery in Rush Springs. All arrangements have been entrusted to Callaway-Smith-Cobb Chapel in Rush Springs.

Mike was born Monday, December 16, 1940, in Alex, to Barclay and Helen (Barnes) McElroy. Mike was raised in Alex and graduated from the Alex High School. He went on to attend Eastern Central University where he earned his master's degree. Later, Mike earned his Superintendents Certificate from the University of Oklahoma. He married the love of his life, Sandra Kay Landrum on August 3, 1963, in Rush Springs. His 35-plus-year career as an educator, coach, and school administrator inspired many students and staff members to be the best they could be. He loved all sports, especially football. Although he was not much of a golfer, Mike often bragged about being published in Golf Digest Magazine. His publish worthy accomplishment? He once received a trophy for having the highest score in a tournament! He was passionate about watching and listening to music and also had a talent for playing the guitar. Mike loved people and always wanted to know where they were from so he could find some common ground with which to visit about. He was a family man that loved his kids and adored his grandchildren. Mike was a good-natured man who was loved by many and will always be remembered for his positive influence in other peoples' lives.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Kay McElroy of the home; a son, Kevin McElroy and wife, Kim of Oklahoma City; a daughter, Kimberly Cook and husband, Chris, of Flower Mound, Texas; two granddaughters, Kaitlyn Cook and Kelsey Cook; and a brother, Bob McElroy. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews as well as many friends that will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Jack McElroy.

Pallbearers will be Carl Melson, Joe Webber, Morris McKay, Barry Foster, Lynn Harmeyer, Farrell Large, and Phil Landrum.

Honorary Pallbearers will be the many students that he taught and coached.
