DAEDF holds Youth Engineering Contest
The Duncan Area Economic Development Foundation (DAEDF) hosted this year's Duncan Area Youth Engineering Contest for 7-12th grade students in the Red River Technology Center school district Nov. 12, with students winning $3,950 in prize money, along with scholarships to Cameron University.
“Each year we look forward to seeing the designs students come up with and love that we are able to collaborate with area schools and employers on this initiative,” stated Jeannie Bowden, Race Coordinator. “This event along with others is educating youth for careers following graduation and helping fill the workforce pipeline for employers.”
Students competed for monetary awards in the areas of engineering, the fastest CO2 race car, overall, and people's choice. In addition, Cameron University presented scholarships to the top three overall winners and teachers received an appreciation gift.
The contest is challenging for students, teachers, and parents. It requires critical thinking, design, drafting, and manufacturing a CO2 race car. This contest is possible because of DAEDF's partnership with local middle schools, high schools, Red River Technology Center, and Cameron University. Duncan's Dream It! Do It! initiative is a manufacturing career pathway associated with the Manufacturing Institute and the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM).
