Wilma Maxine Martin

Wilma Maxine Martin, of Marlow, Oklahoma, passed from this life to her home in heaven on Monday, January 14, 2019. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, January 17 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Marlow, with Dr. Joe Ligon officiating and Rev. Ron Maxfield assisting. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery in Comanche. All funeral arrangements for Maxine have been entrusted to the Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral and Cremation Service in Marlow.

Maxine was born July 30, 1923 in Comanche, Oklahoma to Bill and Myrl Peck. She grew up in Comanche and graduated from Comanche High School in 1941. She met Jesse Potts in California and they were married on May 23, 1945. They were married 34 years until his death in April 1978, living part of that time in Comanche, Oklahoma and part of the time in various towns in California including Ventura and Thousand Oaks. They had two children, Claudia and Calvin. She met her second husband, Oris Martin, in Marlow and they were married on Sept. 22, 1979. They were married 31 years and continued to live in Marlow until his death in December 2010.

Maxine loved being a housewife. She worked at various jobs to supplement the family income when needed, but what she excelled in was being a wonderful wife, mother, and homemaker. She loved her family, and one of her joys was making birthdays, anniversaries, or any holiday a special celebration for her family with her good cooking and baking. She enjoyed playing dominoes and challenged her husband Oris to a game every night after supper. She was a gifted writer and poet, and one of her stories was published in a book just a few years ago. She especially enjoyed writing and receiving long letters, and appreciated so much those who continued to write to her even when she could no longer write in return, nieces Billie Ann Ivy, Elva Gentry, and Alvenia Sallee.

For years, Maxine attended monthly meetings as an invited guest of “The Forty-Niners” a group of women who graduated Comanche High School in 1949.

Maxine was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, Marlow. For many years, she was an active member of the Faith Sunday School class, rarely missing class or the monthly parties. She served as class secretary and reporter. She loved her church and especially her Sunday School class. She was also a member of W.M.U. She will be remembered for her sweet spirit and her friendly smile.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Claudia and Truman Cox of Marlow, a son Calvin Potts of Comanche, a granddaughter and her husband Jessie and Chris Genn of Marlow; a grandson and his wife, David and Beth Cox of Duncan, a grandson Jeremy Potts of Cumming, Georgia; greatgrandchildren Anthony Cox, Alyssa Cox, Ashton Cox, Tori Mackey and her husband Blue, and Tristyn Genn; and great-great grandchildren, Bella and Grey Mackey. She is also survived by step-sons James Martin and his wife Anita of Bossier City, Louisiana, and Wayne Martin and his wife Carolyn of Davis, and numerous step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother and his wife, Ronnie and Janet Peck of Duncan, sister-in-law Cleta Peck of Duncan, sister-n-law Wanell Potts of Comanche; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents Bill and Myrl Peck, husbands Jesse Potts and Oris Martin, a brother Bill Peck, and a step-daughter Doris Martin.

Pallbearers will be nephews: David Peck, Randy Peck, Jeff Peck, Shawn Peck, Lee Roy Caesar, and David Caesar.

Memorial contributions may be made to Chisholm Trail Hospice or First Baptist Church, Marlow.
