“Something for Everyone” at Free Fair

by Elizabeth Pitts-Hibbard

The Stephens County Free Fair is just a few days away, and the Stephens County Extension Office is busy preparing for exhibits and competitions from all over the County.

The Stephens County Free Fair book, which has entry information and a list of competitive classes, is available at the Extension office and Stephens County Fair and Expo office, located at the Fairgrounds at 2002 S. 13th Street in Duncan.

“There will be 4-H and Open Class exhibits on everything from honey to photography, classic needlework, crafts, and horticulture,” said OSU Extension Educator Brenda Gandy-Jones. “Join in and take part in some of the competitions. Share your talents and collect your own ribbons and awards.”

Artists of all ages will have the opportunity to showcase their talents in painting, drawing, and mixed media. Categories are offered for oil, acrylic, watercolor, pen and ink, pastel, as well as 3-D art and collage.

A photography contest is one of the most popular in recent years; all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels are invited to enter their best single images. Photographs are judged on composition and design. Entries are accepted from noon until 7pm on August 18.

Home-canned salsa, jam, and jelly are welcomed in the Food Preservation Division of the fair, and everyone skilled at this culinary art are invited to compete for blue ribbons.

Everyone’s favorite competition, the Pie Show, will be held on Friday, August 21 at 3pm. Entries are accepted from 2pm – 3pm the day of the competition in Territory Hall; a copy of the recipe is required for each entry.

“Best Pie and Best Pie Baker are the most exciting titles awarded during the Stephens County Free Fair Pie Show,” Gandy-Jones said.

Pies are judged on flavor, texture of crust and filling, and general appearance. Aprons are awarded to Best Pie and Best Pie Baker in youth and adult divisions.

“There are many categories to enter and something for everyone to enjoy at the Stephens County Fair,” Gandy-Jones said.

The Stephens County Free Fair is August 19-22 at the Stephens County Fair and Expo Center. Admission is free.
