Outlaws Edge Jay for State Championship

by Elizabeth Pitts-Hibbard

The Marlow Outlaws fought their way through the State Wrestling Championship bracket on Saturday, qualifying 6 for the finals round and bringing home not only the team State 3A Championship trophy, but an individual State Championship for senior Carson Moore.

The Outlaws qualified 13 of their 14 wrestlers at Regionals and went into the State tournament ranked first in Class 3A. Head coach Andy Howington said that after the regional tournament, he felt that the team was prepared for State.

“We’re treating it like any other weekend,” Howington said. “We’re not changing anything with our training.”

Howington added that the wrestlers’ mindset was positive and he felt they were up to the challenge that the State tournament presented. “Every match is going to be tough, but we’re ready to go.”

The mindset paid off for the Outlaws as they battled throughout the day, going into the finals with the lead in the 3A bracket. The six Marlow finals qualifiers – Zach Dawson (126), Case Rich (132), Bryson Hughes (145), Kyle Wilson (182), Carson Moore (220), and Cody Huber (285) each found their place on the podium, with Moore earning the top spot and securing the team win with his 20 points to give Marlow the edge over Jay, 98 – 92.5.

Zach Dawson sailed to the finals after winning by 7-2 decision over Hunter Waits of Berryhill in the quarterfinal and 10-0 major decision over Rashaud Morgan of Vinita. Dawson faced Cascia Hall’s Eli Griffin in the first-place match, losing to Griffin by technical fall and giving Griffin his fourth State Championship.

The 132-pound class saw Case Rich battling back from the consolation bracket after Dylan Henson of Vinita won by fall in the semifinal. Rich took his spot in the finals in the consolation semi with a win by decision over Comanche’s Tucker Oliver, 9-3. Rich took fourth in the finals after Eli Benham of Sperry won by 5-3 decision for third.

Bryson Hughes dominated the 145 bracket with a tech fall over Brody Thomas (Locust Grove) in the quarterfinal and a fall over Tanner Botts (Blackwell) in the semifinal. Hughes faced Cascia Hall’s EJ Tecson in the first-place match and lost by 11-3 major decision to take second.

Kyle Wilson won by tech fall over Jedd Barrett (Inola) in the quarterfinal but fell to the consolation bracket after a controversial call in sudden victory gave Seth Jackson (Sperry) the win in the semifinals. Wilson battled back in the consolation semi with a 14-3 major decision over Johnathon Roberts (Oklahoma Christian School) to go to the third-place match in the finals. His bout with Drew Powell (Bridge Creek) ended in Wilson taking third, 3-1.

Carson Moore won by fall over Carson Dildine of Barnsdall in the quarterfinal and by 7-5 decision over Dalton Diacon of Inola in the semifinal, putting him in the finals to face Jay’s Maverick Williamson, whom he beat, 4-3.

With the pressure on to take not only an individual title but the team’s chance at the Championship, Howington said that Moore was “very nervous” going into the final.

“He’d never been in that role before, that position at State,” Howington said. “It was the biggest match of his career.”

“He performed under pressure,” Howington added. “That’s what leaders do.”

Cody Huber took his spot in the finals after winning by decision over JD McCleary of Blackwell, 3-2 in the quarterfinal and 4-3 decision over Chuck Long of Pawnee in the semis. His match against Johnny Williamson of Jay ended in a fall to give Huber second place.

Howington said that every member of the team contributed to the team win.

“We had guys that may not have made the finals, but they got three points, four points for the team,” the coach said. “When you’re looking at winning the championship by five or six points, that makes the difference.”

The State Championship is Marlow’s first since 2006.
