Sunshine OHCE met for their May meeting at the Stephens County Fairgrounds. There were 24 members present and Natalie Womack, daughter of Dana Womack, was a guest. Sue Smith was the hostess and presented a devotional from “Our Daily Bread” entitled “A reason for optimism based on Proverbs 17:22.

April was a busy month. Many members assisted Brenda Gandy-Jones, OSU Extension with a “Farm to You” program at the Horace Mann Elementary School. A “Plant Exchange” was held involving all county OHCE groups inviting participation from the public which was a success.

A “Sister Club Luncheon” was held for all county groups and was well attended. Attendees enjoyed good food, entertainment, fellowship, and a variety of crafts were available to make.

Members attended a Master Sewing Workshop in Norman in April and are looking forward to passing on their learning to others. In addition, there were two, one day Barn Quilt Workshops held in April with nearly 40 participants learning how to create barn quilts.

On May 9, all OHCE groups in the county participated in a program called “OHCE cares about Foster Care.” A “Sew In” was conducted to make pillowcases and drawstring bags to be given to Department of Human Services Foster Care workers to be used for personal care and hygiene items for the children removed from their homes and placed in foster care. These were one-of-a-kind creations that will be the personal property of the children. In addition, OHCE made a significant contribution to purchase personal items to be contained within these bags/pillowcases. To date 82 pillowcases and 81 bags have been made and others will be added to this number.

Jerri Heilman and Linda Heilman presented the program on “Diet and Inflammation” and after our meeting, members made cards for veterans to be taken to veterans at the Veterans Center in Lawton.

Sunshine members brought food to be distributed to the area Blessing Boxes to help address hunger as a part of one of our state goals to mitigate hunger in our area.

The next meeting scheduled for June 1, at the Stephens County Fairgrounds. If you would like more information about the Sunshine Group or OHCE, call the OSU Ext. office: 580-255-0510. Prospective members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
