Trees down, one resident displaced from her home
In the early hours Sunday morning around 4 a.m., several Marlow residents were issued a loud wake-up call. A storm had blown through and large trees took the brunt of the damage. Well, except for the safe haven Elisa Lucas calls home. She was probably the one most shaken when an old Elm tree came crashing down on top of her home.
“I heard a loud boom, sounded like wood breaking,” she said.
Estimated to be more than 100 years old, the tree broke in three places and landed on her roof, on the top of her outside building, and in the yard. Her grandson, Kaden, 18, was across the street and ran over to be by her side when he heard the boom.
She called the City of Marlow and electric services were dispatched to 807 W. Chickasaw. They turned off the electricity and cut the cable. Around 6:15 a.m. she and Kaden walked around to the backyard. “It was unbelievable, worse than anticipated.”
Lucas is extremely grateful to her insurance adjuster and contractors who are helping her through this unexpected disaster. Her biggest concern was for the safety of her two dogs. They are now being cared for through doggy boarding with a local veterinarian. Rudy McCafferty with Armor Equipment and Lawn Care Services has been dealing with the slow process of tree removal. Because of the enormous size of the tree, it was difficult for them to determine the extent of damage.
Tuesday morning, another storm system dumped a massive amount of rain in a short time. Lucas said the tree on her roof probably protected it from the rain. Tarps will be put in place as the tree is removed. After the storm, it was discovered large portion of the tree busted through the roof of her home. Lucas said she knows it will all take time, but mostly, she’s glad to be safe while she waits for her home to be repaired.
Also, trees came down in the yards at 5th & Nabor Street (Casie Barrington Dorman), and Silverwood Street (Cathy Reinschmidt Hazel, and 704 S. 8th Street (Kim Patterson Vang). Each of these property owners shared the photos on The Review’s Facebook page.
