MHS Outlaw Swimmers, Coach attend OCA All-State
Gage DaVoult and Karsten Terrell, along with their coaches, Julie McCauley and Kristen Terrell, shared one more event together at the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Swim Meet this week in Edmond. Both young men were selected for the OCA West team. The meet signaled the end of their high school swim career.
The event also brought a surprise for Coach McCauley. She was named Region 5 Swim Coach of the Year, an honor bestowed by the votes of other coaches.
“We are beyond proud of Coach Julie! She is not only a great coach, but a great life coach as well. She was 100% committed to this team and it showed,” said Assistant Coach Terrell. “We are so very thankful to have Coach Julie.”
Both coaches shared a few final thoughts on the overall season.
“The transformation of these guys, Gage and Karsten, from junior high to high school, is evidence of all the hard work they have put into becoming the All-Staters they are,” McCauley said.
Terrell said, “The boys have made quite the name for themselves and have set the bar high for High School swim in Oklahoma! They have upheld the Outlaw tradition of excellence - athletically and academically. It truly is unheard of for a small school to have two swimmers make All-State! Everywhere we go, people ask about the Marlow swim team and who we have coming up the next year.”
“It’s been a wonderful and sometimes gut-wrenching ride. These boys set out with goals in 6th grade to have a high school swim team, the first at Marlow. Then they started making goals for being 4x state qualifiers. They did just that. And lastly, All-State. It’s usually unheard of for two swimmers from the same small area school making the All-State cut. They did it. Gage DaVoult and Karsten Terrell, thanks for building a legacy and making those dreams a reality. Proud of you both,” said Chelsea DaVoult, mother of Gage. He signed in February with William Jewell College to swim competitively this upcoming year.
Coach Terrell said if there are Marlow students in high school this year who are interested in swim, they should contact Athletic Director Daryn Brantley.
