Healthy Horizons: Health & Wellness Lifestyle: Unlock Creativity through Movement

by Donelle Gregston

Recently, during a stroll on the newly surfaced track at Miller Park in Marlow, an observation struck me. With joggers braving the August sun and families soaking up the outdoors, the park was alive with movement. This scene brought forth a question: How often do we recognize the link between movement and our creativity?

It's easy to romanticize creativity as this unpredictable spark. Yet, many can attest to the moments of clarity that come while swimming laps at the pool or meandering in nature. So, is there more to this 'creative spark' than meets the eye?

What about this idea of movement as meditation? Historically, various cultures have cherished the bond between movement and mindfulness. The tranquil practices of Tai Chi or the dynamic tribal dances of Africa both emphasize the peace found in motion. Even our everyday activities, whether it's a stretch in the morning or an evening walk, carry undertones of this meditative inspiration. As daily worries fade into the background, the mind finds space, allowing ideas to flourish.

Another aspect of movement and creativity is kinesthetic thinking. Looking past visual and auditory learners lies a group that thrives when in motion. For them, thinking is almost an extension of their physical movements. So, when creativity seems elusive, perhaps a brisk walk or a change of scenery might be the key to rejuvenating the mind.

Speaking of scenery, the environment we move through plays a pivotal role. Whether you're paddling peacefully on a lake, observing the dance of wildlife, or simply changing your workstation, the backdrop influences our creative psyche. Places like the Wichita Mountains are not just recreational spots; they're reservoirs of inspiration. A fresh perspective, as I've often found, can reignite the dimming creative flame.

In essence, the dance between movement and creativity is more intimate than we often realize. This holistic experience intertwines our physical and mental abilities. If you ever find yourself grappling with a creative block, perhaps the remedy is simpler than you think: it might just be a matter of moving. For in movement, we not only engage our muscles but also stir our imagination and spirit.

Summer Mango and Avocado Salad

This refreshing salad, bursting with vibrant colors and flavors, is the perfect representation of summer. The sweetness of ripe mangoes combined with creamy avocados and a zesty dressing makes for a delightful dish that's both nourishing and uplifting. Just like how movement nourishes the soul, this salad is sure to invigorate your palate.

Ingredients:
2 ripe mangoes, peeled, pitted, and diced
2 avocados, pitted and diced
1/2 red onion, finely sliced
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
Juice of 1 lime
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon honey or agave nectar
Salt and pepper, to taste
Optional: 1 jalapeno, seeded and finely chopped for a bit of kick
Optional: 1/4 cup crumbled feta or goat cheese for an added creamy texture

Instructions:
Prep the Produce: In a large mixing bowl, combine the diced mangoes, avocados, sliced red onion, halved cherry tomatoes, and chopped cilantro. If you're opting for a spicy kick, add the finely chopped jalapeno.
Whisk the Dressing: In a smaller bowl, whisk together the lime juice, olive oil, and honey (or agave nectar). Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Toss and Serve: Pour the dressing over the salad mixture and gently toss to combine, ensuring the ingredients are well coated. If desired, sprinkle crumbled feta or goat cheese on top for an added layer of creaminess.
Serve Immediately: Dish out the salad onto plates or in bowls. It pairs beautifully with grilled chicken or fish for a complete meal. Enjoy the burst of summer flavors!
