Report for Sunshine OHCE-April 2022
Sunshine OHCE met on Thursday 4-7-2022 at the Heritage Room at the Stephens County Fairgrounds. Gina Flesher was the hostess. Twenty three members were in attendance with Deb Curry and Karen Slagle as guests along with Brenda Gandy-Jones. We are happy to welcome Cheryl Dowell as a new member. Gina gave the devotional about those unexpected events that occur in our lives that she has chosen to call "God Winks".
Our District OHCE Meeting for the Western Region-South part of the state was held in Duncan on March 25[th]. Gina Flesher has been chosen to be our representative at the state level. Linda Heilman was selected as the Member of the Year, and Lacey Farris (Comanche Homemakers) was selected as the Outstanding Young Member, both will represent our region at the state competition.
Jane Mitchell gave a presentation concerning the importance of reading labels. This is especially critical concerning our medications to check for possible drug interactions. It is also interesting to note food labels on "fat free"/"sugar free" items often contain as much or more calories as regular foods. Be sure also to check for salt content as many foods contain surprising amounts.
Members brought 69 pounds of food which was distributed among different "Blessing Boxes in our efforts to aid families with food insecurity.
Two "Barn Quilt Workshops" are scheduled for April 22nd & 23[rd] to be presented by Brenda Gandy-Jones. It is expected that both will be full. We are excited that so many community members have joined us for these classes. It will be so wonderful to have an expanded "Barn Quilt Trail" here in Stephens County to attract visitors and revenue to our county.
Sue Smith-Raska gave the lesson on "Pancakes around the World". Many cultures prepare a quick griddle bread having various names. Three different types were prepared for sampling.
The next meeting is scheduled for May 5, 2022 to be held at the Stephens County Fairgrounds at 9:30 am. In recognition of OHCE Week, following the meeting at 1:00, classes will be held for "Beginning Sewing" and "Beginning Crochet" at the same location. Anyone in the community interested in attending is welcome. Please contact the numbers below to reserve your spot. If you would like more information about the Sunshine Group or OHCE, call the OSU Ext. office: 580-255-0150 or 580-467-3065 (leave a message at this #).
