Sunshine OHCE May 2019 report
Sunshine OHCE met May 2 at All Saints Episcopal Church with Jane Mitchell and Flo Stuckert hosting 20 members. Gina Flesher, president, called for committee reports. Linda Heilman, Membership Committee, reported that an free ice cream social will be held June 21 at the Stephens County Fairgrounds for anyone that would like to know more about Oklahoma Home and Committee Education groups in Stephens County. This is open to the public.
Booths will be set with information on projects, education programs and the five OHCE groups in the county. All OHCE groups will provide cookies and ice cream for the event. Sheila Ely reported that the Master Volunteer Class will be held Friday, 930am at the fairgrounds for members interested in completing the course together. Bring a sack lunch and drinks and desserts will be provided. This event is free.
Those that complete the course will be recognized at the state convention in July. Toni Bess reported that a tour of Duncan's Old Cemetery, will be on May 16. Those interested are asked to meet at Abe Razen Park at 930am. A guide will be there to share the history of the cemetery and lead the group on the tour. If interested please call the Extension Office, 580-255-0510 to RSVP. Jane Mitchell, Healthy Living, led the group in a short exercise for flexibility and balance. She also shared that statistically, there has been a 30% increase in falls in older adults in the United States from 2007 to 2016. Ms. Flesher shared a list of items needed for the Charis Pregnancy Center and asked members to bring the items to the next meeting. She will set up a date and time that Sunshine members can tour the center in June. Members also voted to purchase a car seat to donate to them. Barbara Cox reported that ten members participated in the sew-in this month to make privacy sheets for the local Highway Patrol unit. Over 215 sheets were made for Highway Patrol officers to use at the scene of highway accidents to provide privacy for the victims. Donnita Hall reported the OHCE County groups will have their garage sale Friday and Saturday and members that brought donations could give them to Ms. Hall who will get them to the sale site. All proceeds from the sale goes to Charis Pregnancy Center. Members were reminded that there will be a Community Forum on the Future of OHCE and Extension Services 530pm on June 17, at the fairgrounds. This is open to the public to give input on what programs are helpful and suggestions for programs for the future. The next meeting will be June 6 at the First Presbyterian Church in Duncan with Vickie Zimmerman and Tonia Stout hosting. The program will be provided by Donnita Hall on "Upcycling Ideas".
After the conclusion of the business meeting, Ms. Stuckert presented the program, "Day Trips in Oklahoma". Brochures and Oklahoma maps were provided to the members. The Oklahoma website, Travelok.com, has information on the different regions in Oklahoma related to lodging, places to eat, and things to do. It can help plan your day trip and what is available along the way to your destination. Members also shared their favorite day trip and places to visit in Oklahoma. Ms. Stuckert offered to plan a day trip or overnight trip in the fall for interested Sunshine Members.
