Healthy Horizons: Health & Wellness Lifestyle -- Winter Hydration: Staying Moisturized in Dry Weather

by Donelle Gregston

Winter brings with it a magical blanket of cold weather, sometimes snow (or ice) and the anticipation of festive holidays. However, this can wreak havoc on your skin. The cold air outdoors and heated indoor spaces can strip your skin of its natural moisture, leaving it dry, tight, and prone to irritation. To combat this, it's crucial to adjust your skincare routine and dietary habits to prioritize hydration during the winter months.

First and foremost, moisturize regularly. Choose a rich, emollient moisturizer that provides a protective barrier against the harsh elements. Applying moisturizer right after a shower or bath, when your skin is slightly damp, helps lock in moisture more effectively.

In addition to external hydration, remember that what you consume plays a significant role in keeping your skin and body hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel as thirsty as you do in the summer. Opt for warm beverages like herbal teas, which not only hydrate but also soothe your throat and warm you up from the inside.

Don't forget about your lips and hands, which are often the first to show signs of dryness. Invest in a good lip balm and carry it with you wherever you go. For your hands, use a thick, hydrating hand cream and wear gloves when venturing out into the cold. Lip balms make great stocking stuffers!

Winter Skin Hydration Mask

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons of plain yogurt (full-fat or low-fat)

1 tablespoon of honey

Instructions:

Start by washing your face with a gentle cleanser to remove any makeup, dirt, or impurities. Pat your skin dry with a clean towel.

In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt with 1 tablespoon of honey. Ensure that the honey and yogurt are well combined.

Apply the mixture evenly to your clean face and neck. You can use your fingers or a clean makeup brush to do this. Avoid the eye area.

Leave the mask on for about 15-20 minutes. During this time, you can relax and enjoy the soothing sensation.

After the designated time, rinse your face thoroughly with lukewarm water. Ensure that all the mask is removed.

Gently pat your skin dry with a towel and follow up with your regular moisturizer if desired.

Why it works:

Yogurt: Yogurt is rich in lactic acid, which gently exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin cells and promoting a brighter complexion. It also contains probiotics that can help balance the skin's microbiome. The natural fats in yogurt provide hydration.

Honey: Honey is a natural humectant, which means it attracts and retains moisture. It helps to lock in hydration, making your skin feel soft and supple. Additionally, honey has antibacterial properties that can be beneficial for acne-prone skin.
