DEWAYNE'S CORNER: 54 years and counting

by Dewayne Boyles

On what we call South Broadway Circle is a business which will mark 55 years in the same location come February this year. This location was once a truck stop. More recently, it was the business of Morrison L.P. Propane and Furniture, which was bought by Dorman and wife Mahatta Flinn in 1969. They remodeled and opened Feb. 20, 1969.

Flinn Furniture Company is well known in Southwest Oklahoma. Mr. Flinn brought all his knowledge of furniture from working 15 years for Callaway Furniture in downtown Marlow. An article in the Marlow Review that month said he would carry all types of furniture and some appliances.

A long-time friend and associate with him at Callaway Furniture, O.L. Smith, was employed working with Flinn at the new store across from Taylor's Restaurant. O.L. Smith was the former owner of the Marlow Theatres and was a part-time employee at Callaway. Dorman Flinn passed in 1985.

I was talking to the current owners, Bridgett, Dorman's daughter and Bill Garrett, her husband, last week. Bridgett and Bill took over the business in 1985. Bill was an outstanding Central High High School student and Bridgett was outstanding at Marlow High School graduating in 1970. I asked if there would be a third generation to keep this fine store going in Marlow? Bridgett said we would just have to wait and see!
