Shouts of "BINGO!" Echo in Library
Patio Garden Club members met for their regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, in the Garland Smith Public Library. Hostesses were Kathye Malcom, Debra Tupin, and Jennifer Turner.
Others present included a new member, Janel Domurat, and a guest, Cynthia Reyes along with Sandy Alexander, Dina Atnip, Suzanne Buckley, Bettie Cooper, Annette Davis, Inga Krueger, Darla Muller, Erin Nash-Jones, and Ann Petty.
To open the meeting, the Gardeners Creed was read in unison, followed by the reading of the article in the Marlow Review and a treasurer's report.
Mrs. Cooper, who serves as President of the club, opened the meeting with discussion of old business which included a report by Sandy Alexander on the results of the three poster contests depicting a butterfly, bird and wildflowers. The posters will now be sent to the final state competition.
Other business included the club's community project in which members, under the direction of City leaders, will trim the young trees which were previously planted along Broadway in Marlow (date to be announced as to when the work will begin); at 5:30 p.m., on Feb. 22, the club will give a program at the Garland Smith Library about wildflowers. After the presentation, guests will get to play a game of BINGO to see how many wildflowers they recognize.
Members were reminded of the upcoming South Central District Spring Convention that will be held in Marlow, Thursday, March 21, at the historic Opera House. Registration ($15) will begin at 9:30, followed by an executive board meeting at 10 and the main program at 10:30. Lunch will be provided and a silent auction will be in progress until the final minutes of the meeting. Those in attendance will also have an opportunity to shop the local stores in Marlow during the noon break.
In new business, Mrs. Cooper read an invitation from the Dahlia Garden Club in Walters to a luncheon on March 5, at 11:30 and a flower show May 17-18; the state convention will be held in Guymon April 12-13; the South Central Region Convention is set for April 24-25 in Little Rock, AR; and the next scheduled meeting for Patio Garden Club is March 14[th] in the Garland Smith Public Library. Anyone interested in learning more about the club is invited to attend.
The program, led by Mrs. Cooper, was an informative talk on why Mistletoe is the State Flower for Oklahoma, how the Oklahoma Rose was selected after Oklahoma Garden Clubs pushed to have it named as our state flower and how the Gaillardia Pachulia (common name is Indian Blanket) became the state wildflower.
After the program, members and guests enjoyed a game of BINGO in which they had to identify wildflowers.
