Patio Club hosts Wildflower Bingo

Gardening tips, light snacks and Bingo highlighted a recent event held in the Garland Smith

Public Library. After introducing Bettie Cooper and Dina Atnip, of the Marlow Patio Garden Club, Librarian Patty Ellsworth said, "We invited our community to an informal program on gardening that would specifically identify wildflowers."

Mrs. Cooper began by asking if anyone knew what the floral emblem for the state was. To everyone's surprise it is the Mistletoe.

"Mistletoe was chosen before statehood," she said. "The reason it was selected was because of the harsh weather in Oklahoma. Nothing except Mistletoe would grow and so that's what they used on grave sites."

The group also learned the Oklahoma Rose is the state flower; Indian Blanket or Gaillardia is the state flower; and Indian Paint Brush is the most expensive costing $1,200 per pound followed by Bluebonnet seed at $45 per pound. After the presentation, everyone enjoyed playing Bingo with everyone going home a winner!

Others present from the community were Staci Sampson, Ashleigh Sampson, Chancie Davis, Madison Davis, Diana Pearson and granddaughter Evalyn, Francis Hahn, Debbie Pryor, Nancy Ward, LuAnn Callaway and Arleta Freeman. Patio members present, along with Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Atnip, were Debra Tupin, Atalie Pierce, Kathye Malcom, Darla Muller, and Cricket Holland.
