Thousands March in Oklahoma City to Protest Trump’s Policies
Oklahoma City – What began as a small march with hundreds moving from Scissortail Park to City Hall quickly grew into a rain-soaked crowd of thousands, united against what they view as President Trump’s authoritarian overreach. This event was part of the nationwide “No Kings” protests, with around 2,000 demonstrations taking place across the country in response to controversial actions by the Trump administration.
Organizers from local advocacy groups like Indivisible Oklahoma and 50501OK emphasized the importance of non-violent protest as demonstrators gathered outside the Civic Center. They urged the crowd to support one another and avoid confrontation.
As thunder rolled across downtown, cheers erupted with each clap, viewed as encouragement for their cause. Many rally-goers wore patriotic attire, celebrating the tradition of peaceful protest in America.
Tera Cagle, a former teacher dressed as Benjamin Franklin, expressed her belief that Franklin would oppose the current administration and emphasized the importance of ensuring that elected officials fulfill their constitutional duties. Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Forrest Bennett, also spoke, discussing the historical implications of divisions among the working class.
However, opinions on protest strategies varied. Azriel, who chose to remain anonymous, raised concerns that non-violent protests could empower Trump, advocating for more direct action at sites relevant to immigration issues, such as ICE detention facilities.
Taci, another protester and self-identified progressive, noted the challenge of finding like-minded individuals since moving to Oklahoma but found inspiration in the gathering, asserting that hate is not the answer.
This rally highlighted the diverse perspectives within the opposition to the Trump administration, showcasing a commitment to peaceful protest alongside calls for stronger action.
