Marlow Elementary School Enhances Literacy Support for Students
In a significant move to improve literacy among students, Marlow Public Schools has expanded its reading support team at Marlow Elementary. The addition of two reading specialists and a reading tutor aims to boost student achievement in reading, aligning with the Oklahoma Department of Education's initiative for stronger literacy outcomes.
Principal Kim Kizarr highlighted the school's proactive approach to literacy, noting a multi-year initiative started to enhance early reading intervention. She emphasized the importance of communication skills in students’ overall education, stating the need for students to know how to write, read, and communicate effectively.
The initiative includes the hiring of reading specialists Jenna Derryberry and Dana Harris for the 2024-25 school year. Together, they aim to provide targeted support to students who require extra help. Kizarr explained that the goal is to reach students quickly to bridge the gap and get them back on grade level.
In addition to the specialists, retired educator Judy Carroll joined the team on November 17 as a reading tutor. This expanded staff allows the school to offer individualized assistance to every student in need. The district employs various screening methods to assess students’ phonological awareness and comprehension abilities.
Working closely with a diverse group of students from kindergarten through fifth grade, Derryberry expressed the significance of early intervention, noting that while every subject is important, reading is the foundation that opens the doors to everything. The specialists focus on one-on-one instruction, relieving classroom teachers and promoting better student outcomes.
Harris, a certified reading specialist and academic language therapist, brings additional expertise to the team, particularly for students with dyslexia. Her focus on "The Big Five" components of reading—phonemic and phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—underscores the structured approach to literacy instruction.
Regular assessments, including benchmark tests, help the team track student progress and identify those who may be at risk of struggling with reading. Harris emphasized the urgency of addressing literacy in the state, referring to the new superintendent’s focus on this critical issue.
Both Derryberry and Harris acknowledged the importance of building student confidence alongside their skills, striving to motivate students as they navigate their reading journeys.
With a strong commitment to literacy and a growing support system, Marlow Elementary School is taking impressive steps to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed in reading and beyond.
A healthy Stephens County requires great community news.
