Local educator Kyle McPherson has been named a finalist for the Professional Oklahoma Educators (POE) Excellence in Education Award for secondary teachers, according to POE Executive Director Ginger Tinney.

A 1999 graduate of Marlow High School, McPherson went on to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University on a golf scholarship. He earned both a Bachelor of Science in Recreational Leadership and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Physical Education in 2005.

Now in his 14th year in education, McPherson has served in several school districts, including Duncan Public Schools at Duncan-Plato Elementary and Bray-Doyle Middle School. He currently teaches science at Empire Middle School.

McPherson is known for his student-focused teaching philosophy, emphasizing engagement, relationships, and relevance. He strives to create a classroom environment where students feel comfortable, valued, and motivated to learn. By incorporating humor into daily instruction, he encourages students to take risks, ask questions, and actively participate, while maintaining high expectations and fostering a positive classroom culture.

“I am truly honored to be nominated and considered for such a prestigious award by Professional Oklahoma Educators,” McPherson said. “Teaching is a calling, and I am grateful for the opportunity to work with students each day and help them grow both academically and personally.”

Empire Middle School Principal Tim Whaley praised McPherson’s contributions, noting his impact on both students and the school community.

“We are proud to have Mr. McPherson as a valued member of our faculty,” Whaley said. “Dedicated educators like him make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students while strengthening our school and community.”

McPherson and his wife, Larra McPherson, have been married for 18 years. She is also an educator, teaching at Horace Mann Elementary School in Duncan. The couple has two daughters, Kylie, 13, and Ellie, 8.

The POE Excellence in Education Award recognizes outstanding educators across Oklahoma who demonstrate a strong commitment to student success, instructional excellence, and professional leadership. Finalists represent the highest standards of teaching and serve as role models within their schools and communities.
