Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - Three Marlow High School students visited the Oklahoma State Capitol, for FCS Day at the Capitol. Lillie Morningstar, Emma Conway and Mya Boyster are all members of their school Family and Consumer Sciences chapter. Organized by the Oklahoma Association of Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (OATFCS), the annual event was Feb. 21, and provides the resources for students to advocate for education programs that shape their lives and communities. Marlow's students joined more than 260 other students to visit with legislators about the importance of their programs. Rep. Brad Boles met with the Marlow group for a direct conversation.

Students viewed democracy in action by observing live proceedings in both the House of Representatives and the Senate chambers, gaining firsthand experience of the legislative process. This year was the second time for the FCS Research Challenge that took place on the 2[nd] floor rotunda. Students showcased their research excellence by competing in the challenge, a science fair-style competition showcasing original research on family and consumer science-related topics relevant to today's families.

"This is an exciting day for our students to not only talk to legislators about the importance of the FCS programs but also for the students to learn more about the legislative progress," said OATFCS President, Karin Davis.

Holly Hanan, FCS State Program Manager said that FCS educators have a goal to prepare students to make informed decisions about consumer education, financial literacy, nutrition and wellness, relationships, housing, textiles, and available career opportunities.
